HISTORY OF RAIPUR
Raipur is in existence since 9th century. Raipur was part of the Dakshina Kosala Kingdom and later in the Maurya Empire. Raipur was the capital of the Haihaya Dynasty Kalchuri Kings. History believes that King Ramachandra established Raipur and subsequently made it the capital of his kingdom. After Independence, Raipur was formerly part of Madhya Pradesh. After the formation of Chhattisgarh state, Raipur became the capital city of Chhattisgarh.
GEOGRAPHY OF RAIPUR
Raipur is located on the banks of Mahanadi River on the Deccan Plateau. Raipur is surrounded by Mahanadi River on the east, dense forest on the south and Maikal Hills, on the North West. Raipur has an elevation of 298 m and spreads over 226 sq kms. It has a population of about 6 million.
GOVERNMENT AND ADMINISTRATION OF RAIPUR
The Raipur Municipal Corporation takes care of the civic administration in the city. Chhattisgarh state road Transport Corporation takes responsible for connecting Raipur with other places by road. Raipur contributes one member to Indian Assembly and 9 members to Chhattisgarh Legislative assembly.
LANGUAGE AND CULTURE OF RAIPUR
‘Baigas’ also known as traditional medical practitioners apply their own methods called Jhad phook to cure diseases, snake bites. Dewar Nacha, Raut Nacha, Panthi & Soowa, Padki and Pandwani are few musical styles and dance dramas. Pandwani is a famous style of singing Mahabharata. Women wearing Lugda (saree) in ‘Kachhora’ style and Polkha with set of ornaments are tradition in Raipur. Chhattisgarhi, the local language is widely spoken in Raipur followed by Hindi and English.
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES IN RAIPUR
Raipur has become the educational hub of Central India. Raipur houses many important engineering colleges like National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raipur and International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Naya Raipur. IIT Chhattisgarh is proposed at Bhilai which is 30 km away from Raipur. Extension of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur is located in Raipur. Many famous colleges for different branches are also available.
TRANSPORT FACILITIES IN RAIPUR
Swami Vivekananda Airport also known as Mana Airport is located 15 kms south of Raipur. Presently Raipur is well connected domestically and International terminal is under renovation. Raipur Junction railways station is one of the few stations in India to get A-1 certificate by Indian railways. National highways 6, 43, 200, 217 and 12A pass through Raipur. Raipur is well connected to all major places in India by road.
TOURISM IN RAIPUR
Raipur has many monuments like sadani darbar, Vivekananda Sarovar or Budha Talab, Nagar Ghadi or City Clock Tower and Gaurav path or The pride way. Raipur has many museums like Mahant Ghasidas Museum, Guru Tegh Bahadur Museum, Sushilpikangan – The Art Gallery, Shabari handicrafts emporium and Chhattisgarh Haat etc. Apart from these, they are many parks and amusement parks in the city. Many religious places like Rajim, Champaranya, Sirpur, Lakshaman Temple etc are located around Raipur.
FESTIVALS CELEBRATED IN RAIPUR
Gouri-Goura, Surti, Hareli, Pola and Teeja are the main festivals of Raipur. Pola is celebrated by worshipping Bullocks and conducting bull races. Teej is the festivals for women. Women pray for their husbands and future husbands’ welfare. Children play Gedi (walking on bamboo) between the festivals of hareli and Pola. Children exhibit various skills in Gedi and participate in Gedi race. Apart from these all the major festivals are celebrated here.
